Tips to Train an Older Dog

They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but who are "they" anyway? At Pat’s Pack Dog Training, we beg to differ. Sure, teaching an old pup can be a little more challenging than a younger dog, but it's not impossible. With a little patience, love, and creativity, you can teach your senior dog some new tricks.

First things first, consider your dog's physical and mental limitations. You want to make sure the tricks you teach them are safe and realistic. Don't expect your 10-year-old dog to suddenly learn how to do backflips like a circus performer.

Next, choose tricks that are relevant to your dog's personality and interests. Does your pup love to fetch? Teach them how to fetch and drop it in a basket. Is your dog a cuddle bug? Teach them how to give hugs on command.

Positive reinforcement is key when teaching your old dog new tricks. Use treats and praise to reward good behavior and keep training sessions short and sweet. And don't forget to have fun! Your dog will pick up on your energy, so keep it light-hearted and enjoyable for both of you.

Remember, it's never too late to learn something new, no matter your age or species 😉.

Happy Dog Training!
